Mainstream - familiar and unthreatening to the masses
music which record companies, especially those with most influence, can capitalize on.
Most of the time, music that is unthreatening, familiar, fun-loving, is what sells the most (Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Lil’ Jon, Usher, Billy ray cyrus). If they do deal with somber issues, they try not to get into too deep so as not to lose the general consumer. They steer clear of more divisive topics (religion, politics, philosophy). Acceptance of a wide variety of people seems to be the rule. If you alienate too many people, then you start to lose most of your paycheck. Sometimes more ‘radical’ movements become very popular (grunge, punk in the 70’s, gansgta rap, folk music in the 60’s) however these types of music can only last as long as those sentiments also last until a leveling out occurs (like erratic waves in a pool finally leveling out). Also, they last as long as the original artists are willing to put up with the record companies until if they switch their image a bit to keep up with the sales. The lifespan of these ‘radical’ groups in the limelight are usually shorter
The sentiments usually by the ‘non-radical’ mainstream music, usually are the sentiments of most people. If we find that the objectification of women is the norm, then we would find that it only started that way since sentiment had already been like that, that is, until a symbiotic relationship could be reached.
